Radiators cold at the bottom? Here's what it means

Cold at the bottom means sludge; cold at the top means air. How to tell the difference, what a power flush actually does, and when to fit a magnetic filter.

Where a radiator is cold tells you almost everything about what's wrong with it. Run the heating for twenty minutes, then put your hand across each radiator top to bottom and side to side. The pattern is the diagnosis.

Cold at the top = air

Air rises, so trapped air collects along the top of the panel. Bleed the radiator with the heating off and the system cool: hold a cloth under the bleed valve, open it a quarter turn with the key, let the hiss stop and water appear, then close it. Re-check the boiler pressure afterwards and top up to 1.2 bar if it has dropped.

If air keeps coming back within a few weeks, don't just keep bleeding. Persistent air means the system is drawing it in — through a small leak, a failing pump gland, a feed-and-expansion tank problem, or hydrogen gas being produced by internal corrosion. That last one shows up as radiators that need bleeding constantly and gas that burns when lit at the bleed valve. It means the system needs cleaning and inhibiting, not bleeding.

Cold at the bottom = sludge

Magnetite — black iron oxide produced as steel radiators corrode internally — is heavy. It settles along the bottom of each radiator and builds up until only the top third circulates. Alongside cold bottoms you'll usually see:

  • Radiators furthest from the boiler barely warming
  • Noisy pipework and a boiler that kettles (a rumbling, boiling-kettle sound)
  • Black water when you bleed or drain
  • The system taking much longer to come up to temperature than it used to
  • Repeated pump failures

Cold at one side, hot at the other

Usually a partially closed or seized lockshield valve, or a stuck thermostatic radiator valve pin. TRV pins seize in the closed position over summer; tapping the pin gently or freeing it with a pair of grips often brings the radiator back to life. If the whole radiator is cold and both valves are open, the balancing across the system needs looking at.

Cold radiators upstairs only, or downstairs only

That's typically a circulation issue: pump speed set too low, a partially blocked pipe run, an incorrectly set diverter valve, or a system that has never been balanced. Balancing is unglamorous, takes an hour or two, and makes more difference to comfort than most people expect.

What actually fixes sludge

  • Power flush. High-flow pumped cleaning with a chemical cleanser, radiator by radiator, with a magnet capturing the debris. Typically half a day to a full day on an average Lincolnshire home.
  • Chemical clean. Cleanser dosed into the system, circulated for a period, then drained. Cheaper and less disruptive, and appropriate for lightly affected systems.
  • Magnetic filter. Fitted on the return pipe at the boiler, it captures magnetite before it can settle. Most manufacturers now require one for the warranty to remain valid. It needs emptying at each annual service.
  • Corrosion inhibitor. Dosed after cleaning and topped up whenever the system is drained. Without it, sludge simply comes back within a couple of years.

How to tell if you need a full flush

Bleed a downstairs radiator into a clear glass. Clear or straw-coloured water means the inhibitor is likely still working. Black, gritty water means the system is corroding and cleaning is overdue. If several radiators are cold at the bottom and the boiler kettles, a chemical clean alone probably won't be enough.

The payoff

A clean, balanced system heats faster, reaches temperature at a lower flow temperature, and costs less to run — and the boiler isn't fighting a restriction, which is what shortens its life. If you're considering a new boiler, cleaning is not optional: fitting an expensive appliance to a dirty system is the quickest route to a blocked heat exchanger and a refused warranty claim.
