Boiler broken down? What to check first

A few quick checks can save you a call-out — and if none of them help, they tell our engineer where to start.

• Pressure: the gauge on the front should read roughly 1 to 1.5 bar when the heating is off. Below that, many boilers lock out.
• Power and controls: check the boiler has power, the timer is on, and the thermostat is set above room temperature.
• Gas supply: make sure your other gas appliances work and, on a prepayment meter, that there's credit.
• Frozen condensate pipe: in a hard frost, a gurgling boiler that won't fire is often a frozen plastic pipe outside. Warm water (not boiling) poured over it usually clears it.
• Fault code: note the code or flashing light on the display — it helps us bring the right part.
